Back labor refers to the pain and discomfort that pregnant women experience in their lower back. While back pain is common with pregnancy, a quarter of all women report experiencing severe discomfort that is most intense during contractions and can be painful between contractions. In addition, back labor can often be accompanied by an irregular contraction pattern, a labor that is slow to progress, and a prolonged pushing stage.

A frequent cause of back labor is the position of the baby. A position such as occiput posterior (when baby is facing the mother’s abdomen) can cause pressure from the baby’s head to be applied to the mother’s sacrum (the tailbone). The result can be an intense discomfort during labor. One way to relieve back labor, when it is cause by fetal position, is to have regular pregnancy chiropractic adjustments.
