5 Things to Expect When Working With a Doula

pregnant womanAs many of you know, I am part of a collaborative group called Mother Nurture Bay Area. The mission of the group is to focus on supporting the health and wellbeing of mothers, babies and families through specialized pre- and postnatal care. Part of that mission is doula services.

If you haven’t worked with a doula before or are interested in what they do, here are 5 things you can expect when you work with one:

  1. Consultation: Most doulas offer a no-charge consultation to learn more about them and the services they provide
  2. In-Person Visits: Your doula will spend time with you to build rapport, discuss your health and pregnancy history, create your ideal birth plan, determine your needs and address any concerns you might have. They’ll also review relaxation, breathing and comfort techniques with you
  3. Care Provider Visit: Your doula will schedule a time to meet with your care provider. They will share your birth plan, and follow up on your expectations and concerns about labor and birth
  4. Labor Support: Your doula is there to help you and your family. They will be with you at the birthing location offering continuous encouragement and guidance during labor and through the entire birthing process. You can also expect them to help with early breastfeeding and bonding support
  5. Postpartum Visits: Just because the baby has arrived doesn’t mean your doula is done. They will be there to help you with breastfeeding support, and sometimes even housecleaning, laundry, shopping, errands, older child care, etc.
